6 Essential Fall Shoes for Women You’ll Wear Every Single Year
The right shoes can make getting dressed for fall so much easier. From everyday flats and sneakers to mules, clogs, boots, and heels, these six fall shoe styles give you versatile options to wear with everything from jeans and trousers to skirts and dresses all season long.
I love shoes, but I’ve learned over the years that I really don’t need dozens of different pairs to create a versatile fall wardrobe. The shoes I end up wearing the most are the ones that work with multiple outfits and can easily take me from early fall through the cooler weather later in the season.
For me, that means having a mix of casual everyday shoes, polished styles, and a few dressier options that work with everything from jeans and trousers to dresses and skirts. I also tend to stick with neutral colors like black, brown, tan, and cream because they’re easy to mix and match with pieces I already own.
Instead of focusing only on the latest fall shoe trends (your wallet will thank you), I’m sharing the six styles I think are actually worth having in your closet. Below, I’m breaking down when I wear each one, what I like to pair them with, and some of my favorite options to shop right now.

6 Essential Shoes Every Woman Needs for Fall
From casual everyday styles to more polished and dressy options, these are the six types of shoes I rely on most throughout fall. Each one serves a different purpose, but together they give you plenty of options for everything from everyday outfits and work to date nights and special occasions.
1. Flats
Flats are one of the most versatile shoes to wear throughout fall, especially during the beginning of the season when it may still be too warm for boots. They’re comfortable enough for everyday wear but polished enough to pair with everything from jeans and trousers to skirts and dresses.
There are plenty of styles to choose from depending on the look you prefer. Ballet flats have a classic, feminine feel, while pointed-toe flats tend to look a little sleeker and more elevated. Mary Janes add interest with their signature strap, and slingback flats are a great transitional option for warmer fall days when you want something that feels a little more open.
Material and color can also make flats feel more seasonal. Leather is a classic option that works for both casual and dressier outfits, while suede adds a softer texture that feels especially fitting for fall. Neutral shades like black, brown, tan, and cream are easy to mix and match, but deeper shades and subtle prints can also be an easy way to add some interest to a simple outfit.
I personally have dark brown suede ballet flats, black pointed-toe leather flats, black Mary Janes, and tan suede pointed-toe slingbacks. I reach for each pair for slightly different outfits, but you definitely don’t need several styles. If you’re starting with one, I’d choose a neutral color, material, and silhouette that work with the clothes and occasions you dress for most.

2. Sneakers
Sneakers are an easy choice for casual fall outfits because they’re comfortable, practical, and versatile enough to wear with everything from jeans and trousers to leggings, skirts, and even casual dresses. Classic low-profile sneakers have a cleaner, more streamlined look, while retro runners and chunkier styles can give a simple outfit a sportier feel.
Color and material can make everyday sneakers feel more seasonal for fall. White and cream are classic options you can wear year-round, while brown, taupe, beige, and other warm neutrals pair especially well with fall colors and layers. Suede is another easy way to bring more texture into an outfit, and gum soles can give even a simple sneaker a slightly warmer, more casual look.
If you’re choosing one versatile pair, I’d focus on a relatively simple silhouette in a neutral color that works with the bottoms you wear most. Low-profile sneakers tend to pair especially well with jeans, trousers, and skirts, while retro runners and slightly chunkier sneakers can balance wider-leg pants and more relaxed outfits.
I personally wear my Adidas Sambas throughout fall, but I also tend to swap some of my lighter summer sneakers for brown and taupe suede styles once the season changes. I’ve been wearing both low-profile and retro-inspired sneakers, depending on the outfit, and I like having a mix because they create completely different looks even when I’m wearing the same basic pieces.

3. Loafers
Loafers are a classic fall shoe that can easily bridge the gap between casual and dressier outfits. Their structured silhouette makes them especially useful when you want something more polished than a sneaker but don’t necessarily want to wear heels. They work well with jeans and trousers for everyday outfits, but can also be styled with skirts, dresses, and workwear.
There are plenty of loafer styles to choose from, so you don’t have to lean into the traditional preppy look if that isn’t your style. Classic penny loafers and horsebit loafers have a timeless feel, while simpler, low-profile silhouettes can look almost like a more structured flat. Chunky and lug-sole loafers create a bolder look and can add more visual weight to an outfit.
Leather is probably the most versatile material if you want a pair that can transition between casual and polished outfits, while suede can give loafers a softer, more relaxed feel for fall. Black and brown are classic choices, but tan, cream, and other neutrals can work just as easily depending on the colors you wear most.
Loafers are actually the one style on this list I haven’t worn much myself. I love the look of them on other women, but I’ve never quite found the right pair for me. I tend to prefer sleeker, low-profile silhouettes over chunkier styles, and I’ve recently found a few pairs I really like, so I may finally be coming around to them. If I were adding a pair to my closet, I’d personally choose a simple black leather loafer with a streamlined sole that I could wear casually or dress up when I want something more polished.

4. Clogs or Mules
Clogs and mules are easy slip-on shoes that work especially well during fall when you want something comfortable and effortless. Both styles are typically backless, but clogs tend to have a more substantial, casual silhouette, while mules can range from relaxed everyday styles to sleek, heeled options that feel much more polished.
Clogs pair especially well with casual fall outfits like jeans, leggings, trousers, sweaters, and oversized layers. Suede and other soft textures can make them feel even more seasonal, while neutral shades like brown, taupe, tan, and black are easy to work into everyday outfits. Heeled mules offer a dressier alternative and can be worn with jeans and trousers or paired with skirts and dresses for work, dinner, or other occasions when you want something more elevated.
If you’re deciding between the two, I’d think about where you plan to wear them most. A casual clog is great for everyday outfits and running around, while a heeled mule gives you a backless option that can transition more easily into dressier outfits. You definitely don’t need both—the best choice comes down to your personal style and where you’re most likely to wear them.
I personally gravitate toward casual clogs and wear a taupe suede Birkenstock-style pair throughout fall. I love how easy they are to throw on with relaxed everyday outfits, especially when I want something comfortable but don’t necessarily want to wear sneakers. I don’t currently own mules, but if I were adding a pair to my closet, I’d choose a sleek heeled style rather than a flat, slipper-style mule so I could wear them for dressier occasions too.

5. Boots
Boots are one of the most practical shoes to have once the weather starts cooling down, and the right pair can work with everything from jeans and trousers to leggings, skirts, and dresses. Depending on the style, they can take you from casual everyday outfits to work, date night, and dressier occasions.
There are plenty of styles to choose from, including ankle boots, Chelsea boots, knee-high boots, and cozy UGG-style options. Rather than trying to own every type, I’d focus on the silhouettes that work best with your personal style and the outfits you wear most. Neutral shades like black, brown, and tan are especially versatile and make it easier to wear the same pair throughout the season.
I personally own several different boot styles because I wear them so often throughout fall and winter, but you definitely don’t need a huge collection. If you’re trying to figure out where to start, I put together a complete guide to the must-have fall boots for women I think are actually worth owning, including how to choose and style each one.

6. Heels
Heels are a useful option to have for fall when you need something dressier for date night, weddings, dinners, work events, or other special occasions. They can instantly make jeans and trousers feel more elevated and are an easy choice when you’re looking for fall shoes to wear with dresses or skirts.
There are plenty of heel styles and heights to choose from, and you don’t need a particularly high heel to create a polished look. Kitten heels and low heels can give you just enough height while still being easier to walk in and wear for longer periods of time. Classic pumps have a timeless feel, while slingbacks and ankle-strap styles can add a little more interest depending on the outfit. Comfort is just as important as heel height, though, so I’d pay attention to the overall fit and construction of the shoe if you plan on wearing them for several hours.
Material and color can also help heels transition into fall. Leather and suede are classic choices, while mesh can add texture to a dressier outfit without feeling overly heavy. Neutral shades like black and dark brown are especially versatile for the season and pair easily with everything from denim and trousers to fall dresses.
I personally don’t wear heels very often because most of them start hurting my feet pretty quickly. When I do wear them for date night or an event, I usually gravitate toward lower heels and kitten heels because I find them easier to wear for longer periods of time. My black suede kitten-heel slingbacks are a pair I can comfortably wear for hours.
